Fibreoptic telescopes are the mainstay of diagnostic and therapeutic interventional flexible endoscopy. Rapid cooling of cells to below −40°C results in supercooling and the formation of intracellular ice crystals that disrupt cell membranes and intracellular organelles. Hepatic cryosurgery is currently limited to patients who are considered inoperable either because the hepatic reserve is compromised by cirrhosis (primary liver tumours) or because the disease is bilateral and extensive (secondary deposits). However, it can be used in conjunction with resection of a liver lobe.
