Fibreoptic telescopes are the mainstay of diagnostic and therapeutic interventional flexible endoscopy. Hepatic cryosurgery is currently limited to patients who are considered inoperable either because the hepatic reserve is compromised by cirrhosis (primary liver tumours) or because the disease is bilateral and extensive (secondary deposits). However, it can be used in conjunction with resection of a liver lobe.
